Just getting started in amateur radio. Got my Technician ticket in February, 2023, General in April, 2023 and Amateur Extra in June, 2023. Right now I just work 70 cm and 2 meter. Starting slow to make sure I like the hobby before spending a ton of money on equipment. I’m trying to be active on nets and in my club (Harrisburg Radio Amateurs Club). I’m lucky to have found a couple of mentors who are showing me the ropes on the HF bands. They were letting me use the equipment in their stations so I have a few HF contacts even though I didn’t have an HF radio yet. I just bought an ICOM IC-7300 and build an EFHW from a kit so I’m finally ready to get on HF on my own equipment.
I was an aviation electronics technician in the Navy but that was 45 years ago and I haven’t worked with electronics since then so I’ve forgotten almost everything I knew back then. It’s been exciting for me to study the manuals for General and Amateur Extra and re-learning electronic theory. The books are great for learning the knowledge but there’s nothing like having an Elmer/mentor to show new hams how to actually be a ham.
I’m also a certified drone pilot. I’d love to find other hams that are also licensed drone pilots and then form a network of people that can use drones to help find lost pets, etc.
