My journey into the world of technology began in the summer of 1980 when I was just 10 years old. I taught myself how to program basic on the Commodore Vic 20, connecting everything to an old black and white TV, a feat that was quite impressive considering my parents’ lack of technological prowess.
After graduating high school in 1988, I joined the military, where I served as a 94F. I was transferred to headquarters in Oklahoma City, where I managed the computer support for the entire division. Despite my significant contributions, I was limited to the rank of an E-4 Specialist, as there were no higher non-enlisted positions for computer support personnel in the military at that time.
Following my military service, I attempted college but initially struggled. However, after a 20-year hiatus, I returned to academia, earning my Associate’s Degree and then my Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering. This led to an exciting job opportunity that prompted my move from Oklahoma to Fort Wayne, IN in 2012.
In my new role, I travel extensively across the country, and sometimes around the world for my job. However, when the pandemic hit, I found myself grounded. With the extra time on my hands, I studied alongside my coworker and successfully passed both the technical and general Ham exams on my first attempt on May 15, 2020.
Since then, I have been actively involved in the local and global Ham radio community, operating DMR, Wires-X, and now HF. I’m currently troubleshooting some antenna issues on the HF side, but my 2M and 70CM are functioning perfectly with a Diamond X30 antenna in my second-floor attic, paired with my new Yaesu FT-991A.
I’m thoroughly enjoying the learning process and the opportunity to connect with the Elmers on the air. It’s been a fascinating journey from that summer in 1980 to where I am now, and I’m excited to see where my passion for technology will take me next.
