Member Bio
Hello! Thank you for the lookup. Former Callsign, KF4MKP was held for 29 years. NA7LA issued on 5/2/2025.
I use QRZ logs almost exclusively. Renewing my LoTW for new callsign, your confirmation is much appreciated!
I go by Alan (middle name) or Al.
I use an eclectic mixture of gear: Icom, Ameritron, Baofeng, Woxun, MFJ, Dentron, LDG, Daiwa, Icom, TenTec, Alinco, Yaesu, Vibroplex, Radiowavz, Hustler, and Arrow antennas plus and many homebrew things such as baluns, ununs, and antennas.
all current rigs are;
Icom IC-7200 for Base and Portable
Yaesu FT-857d for Portable
Yaesu FT-817nd for QRP
TenTec 538 Jupiter for Base and Base with amplifier if needed.
Yaesu FT-2980 for Mobile
Yaesu FT60r HT & Baofeng for walking Mobile and use in the boat as VHF Marine.
QTH: Soddy Daisy, Tennessee USA. GRID EM75jf
Antennas: All QTH HF antennas are homebrew or wire. Portable HF antennas are homebrew or the Buddipole!
VHF/UHF from the QTH is an Arrow J-pole. Mobile 2m I use either a Hustler or MFJ magmount antenna.
The Ameritron AL-811H gets warmed up on occasion.
You may find me on SSB, CW, or digital modes.
On CW I use a Vibroplex iambic paddle, MFJ mini-paddle, or a homebrew straight key which is my preference. CW is my favorite mode but I’m rusty.
I was first exposed to electronics and radio when I joined the navy in 1989, becoming a submarine radioman. Thanks to the navy for teaching me morse code among other useful things involving radio and electronics. First licensed as an amateur in 1996 as a Technician Plus easily copying the code for the General Class. I held off taking the General class license until around 2008 eventually taking the Amateur Extra exam in 2018.
I like to camp and operate portable in the Cherokee National Forest among other nice places.
If I’ve worked you on any band or mode, Thank you! I’ve met some great people through the radio hobby.
ARRL member.
